ADHD Holistic approach

ADHD is a neurobehavioral disorder in childhood, which remains underdiagnosed because of lack of awareness of parents, teachers. Children with ADHD are frequently labeled as problem children rather than children with a medical problem.

  • Eighty percent of children maintain their diagnosis into adolescence and at least 60% remain impaired by symptoms in adulthood
  • There are three presentations of ADHD depending on which of the three core symptoms (inattention, hyperactivity and impulsivity) present:
    • Predominately inattentive (previously referred to as ADD)
    • Predominately hyperactive (very rare)
    • Combined (most prevalent).

ADHD symptoms

A wide range of behaviors are associated with ADHD. Some of the more common ones include:

  • having trouble focusing or concentrating on tasks
  • being forgetful about completing tasks
  • being easily distracted
  • having difficulty sitting still
  • interrupting people while they’re talking

ADHD testing and diagnosis

Deciding if a child has ADHD is a process with several steps. One step of the process involves having a medical exam, including hearing and vision tests, to rule out other problems with symptoms like ADHD. Another part of the process may include a checklist for rating ADHD symptoms and taking a history of the child from parents, teachers, and sometimes, the child.

ADHD and homeopathic management:

Unlike conventional medicine, homeopathy seeks to treat each child as an individual. There is no homeopathic Ritalin. Each child is assessed as the unique person they are. The remedy must reflect everything about the child. A detailed history is fundamental to the correct choice of remedy. The homeopath will ask about the health of the child and the family, the pregnancy and delivery, early development, vaccinations, life events, schooling, favourite foods, drinks to mention just a few points. The more information gathered, the easier it is to find that tailor-made remedy.

Often apparently trivial information will lead to the remedy. Sometimes a drawing made by the child holds the key to the cure.

Homeopathy offers a safe gentle healing, and may be combined with other therapies like psychological therapy, behavioral therapy, etc. and treatments. I have often used it even when the child is on Ritalin. As the child improves, the dose of Ritalin can be lowered and gradually withdrawn, with the knowledge and consent of the other health practitioners involved.

Homeopathy is safe, non-habit forming, effective mode of treatment for all ages.
